So, how can you help your child find that “good fit” book? One easy way is by using the 5-finger rule. Have your child open the book somewhere near the center and begin reading the page. Each time they come to a word they can’t read, stumble over, or don’t know the meaning of, have them put up one finger (or you can listen to them read and put up one of your fingers). 0-1 means the book is too easy and 5 means the book is too hard. If they have two or three fingers up, it’s probably a good fit book.
